I’m looking to replace my rear tires. The fronts have plenty of wear left. I bought the truck, gues tires never got rotated… they are Michelin X LT a/s 265/70/17s. Not in production anymore. Diameter 31.5 inches? Pros say don’t mix and match… a worn tire can lose 1/8-1/4 in diameter… so even now my rears could be .25 or more smaller than tears due to wear. There are other concerns? Traction… grip… are these modern differentials really that sensitive? I’d think running 35s is harder on the differential than tires .1.2 smaller or larger? Just interested in knowing more.

since the michelin x lt a/s is discontinued you can go with the new defender ltx m/s2 which has basically the same 31.6 inch diameter and will pair up fine if you're just doing the rear axle you don't need to worry about the diff unless you’re driving in 4wd on dry pavement or have a super tight limited slip but even then a quarter inch difference from wear is well within the mechanical tolerance of a dodge truck

the real "modern" concern is your abs and traction control because if the rears spin significantly faster than the fronts due to a size mismatch the computer might think you're slipping and cut power or pulse the brakes unnecessarily but at 265/70/17 you'd need a huge difference for that to happen so just keep the new ones on the rear to help with wet traction and you'll be golden
